D-Day

Summary

D-Day, officially known as Operation Overlord, was the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied France on June 6, 1944. Nearly 160,000 American, British, Canadian, and other Allied troops landed on five beaches along the Normandy coast under heavy German fire. The operation was the largest amphibious invasion in history, involving thousands of ships, aircraft, and paratroopers. Despite suffering approximately 10,000 casualties on the first day, the Allies successfully established a foothold in Western Europe.
